Reading High’s Ruben Rodriguez selected for Puerto Rico U18 basketball team

Reading High junior Ruben Rodriguez has been chosen to play for Puerto Rico’s U18 national team, he said on Sunday night.

Rodriguez and Puerto Rico will compete in the FIBA Americas Championship from June 6-12 in Tijuana, Mexico. Argentina, Brazil, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, the United States and host nation Mexico will also participate in the tournament.

“It’s honestly a blessing,” Rodriguez said. “It’s crazy to think about being part of the team. They called my dad (Reuben Sr.) and he came into the room and told me.

He has received scholarship offers in recent weeks from Drexel, Jacksonville and Mount St. Mary’s.

Earlier this month, the 6-1 Rodriguez was named to the Pennsylvania Sportswriters Class 6A All-State First Team for the second straight season.

He joined a short list of Berks players who were twice selected to the first team, including Lonnie Walker IV and Stu Jackson of Reading High, Stevie Mitchell of Wilson, Donovon Jack of Central Catholic and Berks Catholic and Ron Krick of West Reading.

Rodriguez led Reading High (26-4) to its first Berks Conference title in three years and its second straight District 3 6A championship, the first time the Red Knights have won back-to-back district crowns since 1976-77 .

He averaged 19.8 points per game, 5.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 3.2 steals. He scored a school-best 50 points in less than three quarters in a 111-43 win over Daniel Boone in January.

He reached 1,000 points during his high school career, which began at Muhlenberg, and during his two seasons with the Red Knights. He has 1,291 in total, including 1,003 at Reading.

And now he is part of a national team.

“I’m excited to see how everyone is playing basketball,” he said. “I look forward to discovering different cultures. This will help me in every way.
