Taiana: UK ‘cynical’ when backing Ukrainian territorial integrity and denying Argentina over Falklands
Argentine Defense Minister Jorge Taiana again accused the British government of being “cynical” since it has a double standard, on the one hand they support Ukrainian sovereignty and on the other hand they deny the Argentina’s legitimate rights over the sovereignty of the Falkland/Malvinas Islands
“It is the British who say that the territorial integrity of Ukraine must be defended, (from Russia) and it is the British who deny the defense of the territorial integrity of Argentina, it is cynical, the lack of respect for the law and disrespect for international law,” Taiana said at an event at Argentina’s main naval base in Puerto Belgrano.
Taiana also announced the creation of the Joint Maritime Command, “a decision to coordinate efforts to guarantee security and control, as well as to patrol our waters, our territorial sea, our exclusive economic zone”, explained the Minister of Defense .
“This common task shows the priority we give to the South Atlantic, defined for years by the coastal countries as an area of peace and cooperation, and which is completely hampered by the permanent presence of a provocative and aggressive fleet of the United Kingdom in our Malvinas Islands”, insisted Taiana in front of all the senior officials of the Argentine Navy present.
Taiana went on to say that Argentina is the eighth country in the world in terms of territory, with enormous rich resources and a huge continental shelf, also one of the largest in the world, and is “a nation, a state which needs a strong armed force to guarantee our independence and our sovereignty”
“We need armed forces capable of deterring any enemy attack, with the ability to react quickly, strong and respected by other armed forces”
“It means recovering, repairing, modernizing, building and acquiring, in a process that will not be resolved in a few years, but it is a process in which a large majority of the Argentine community is engaged”
The minister praised the role played by the Argentine armed forces during the pandemic, “working side by side to defeat this invisible enemy that has cost too many lives and is still among us”, and promised better equipment and support for these national emergencies.
“We are well aware that from a professional point of view with better equipment we will have more opportunities, and we are aware that the members of our armed forces need better income conditions, and that we cannot have them at the current situation and levels”.
Taiana finally said it’s not just about increasing current income but bringing it up to the level of other security forces’, but that’s an effort the president is committed to and we’ll come up with a plan. achievable to make it possible. ”.
